ear mites are parasites. There are 3 types of mites your dog can get. They are: Otodectes (the ear mite), Demodectic ( red mange mite) and Sarcoptes (sarcoptic mange mite).Mites are contagious

ear mites are common in dogs that live with cats. A dog that is infected with ear mites will have a dark coffee ground crust in its ears. The dog will scratch. The ear will have an odor to it. Most cases can be treated with ear medications. Sarcoptic mange is a type of mite that burrows into the top layers of skin.. It causes severe itching. The scratching leads to open sores and possibly infection. I knew someone a long time ago who had a dog who had the mange and the dog lost its hair because of its scratching. It was awful. This condition is extremely contagios. If one pet has the mange in your household, you can bet the other animals will have it soon if you dont get the animal treatment soon.

Sarcoptic mange is treated by medications and dips or baths. The vet might give the dog an anti itch medication to relieve some of its suffering. If skin infections have developed, the vet will give your dog an antibiotic too. 'I got a dog from the pound many years ago that had distemper. I didn't know it cause I didn't know the symptoms. The dog was a collie mix with a wonderful temperament. After a day or so at home, he developed a cough, diarrhea and vomiting. He also had a discharge from his eyes and nose. We took him to the vet. The vet told us to keep him in a dark place and gave him some medication. We put him in our basement until he recovered. The vet didn't expect my dog to live. However, the dog made a full recovery. Distemper is hard to treat. Most dogs will die from the disease or become badly disabled to the point you will have to put the dog to sleep. It is very contagious. Its best to have your dog vacinated to prevent the disease in the first place.
